Dilara Mahmudova STROKE INCIDENCE IN BAKU – ECOLOGICAL SOLUTION
Azerbaijan Medical University, Baku

The problem of cerebral-vascular pathology and its most dangerous manifestation –the cerebral insult has been extraordinary actual all over the world. In big cities with population over 1 million people its occurrence is evidently higher than in smaller cities with population up to 500.000 people and the countryside as well as mortality and disability rates.

In Azerbaijan during the period from 2006-2008 cerebral-vascular pathology increased and specifically in Baku in 1,5 times!

In 2007 Azerbaijan was ranked among 5 mostly polluted countries (Mercer – Human Resource).

The Ministry of Ecology officially claimed that in Baku the share of transport emissions in the air is 50 percent higher than the total amount of the air pollution. The main compounds of the city smog are SO2 and NO x. SO2 is a colourless gas with sharp smell, which already in small concentrations (20-30 mg/m3) irritates conjunctiva and respiratory tract mucosa. The atmosphere is mostly polluted by nitrogen dioxide NO2 – a colourless odourless poisonous gas, which irritates respiratory organs.

Health is not only absence of illnesses but also a physical, psychological and social well-being of a person. The following signs might be observed as signs of chronic intoxication: distortion of normal behaviour and habits including neuropsychical disturbances: unduly weariness or fatigue, drowsiness or insomnia, apathy, concentration difficulties, forgetfulness, temper attacks.

Amount of nitrogen dioxide emitted in the air in Baku today due to fuel combustion exceeds the limit and comes to 1,25 ml/M3, (norm - 0,04 ml/M3) . It results in a constant shortage of oxygen, which leads to increase in cardiovascular diseases (heart infarctions and strokes).

Comparative analysis of the disease rate in the country during last five years revealed a steady tendency of its increase. Khatainsky district is on the top of the rating among 10 other regions on the total quantity of patients, mainly in chronic forms.

Analysis of survival rate conducted in 2005-2008 in the country in general and in the capital discovered a prognostically unfavourable type of the survival curve for the capital: increase in mortality rates. Regression analysis reported higher survival at hospitals.

The state of the costal zone of Baku Bay – Khatainsky District is deteriorating due to strong gas content, soil pollution with oil products, bad quality of drinking water, great number of waste dumps, radiation, costal pollution. 97% of polled population regard discharge the waters from oil processing and oil chemical plants into the Caspian Sea as the utmost threat to the environment.

93% of the respondents confirmed the impact of environment on health. The atmosphere pollution strongly affects adaptation potential of the human body.

The year 2010 is declared by the President of Azerbaijan is the Year of Ecology.
