Astrakhan State University, Astrakhan, Russia

Due to the evolution of kinds the environment with its physical, chemical, climatic and other parameters is rather conservative. The induced environment has been changing so fast that the human organism cannot adapt to many alterations. The visual environment of the urbanized territories is deteriorating and becomes more aggressive.

Problems of visual perception of the environment, its influence on the human organism, elaboration of standard documents on available size of homogeneous and negative fields in the city architecture are the subjects of new ecologic field – video ecology. This article deals with economic problems of the cities, including such issues as the city scale, natural conditions of the territory, types and industrial output, the features of site development and geoecological situation, and etc.; ecological problems connected with the degradation of agricultural lands, the intensification of power resources usage, the deterioration of air and water resources, the decline of hygienic, sanitary and epidemiological conditions and etc.; social-psychological problems caused by the increase of mental diseases, the change of citizens spatial behaviour, a high level of social mobility, the variety of social-cultural groups, a high population density and etc.

On the basis of the literature data we carried out the analysis of young citizens’ relation at the age of 17-22. A 10-level scale is used to estimate the environmental impact on their health and emotional-mental condition. The method of focus groups and interviews of students from different courses were also used.

The 2nd year journalism students and the 4th year students of ecology, natural resource management and bioecology took part in the questionnaire.

According to the results of the questionnaire all respondents are negative about similar flat surfaces and building fronts around their residential area and the city as a whole. And all the respondents expressed a desire to see buildings and houses of various décor and design in their residential area.

When choosing suitable definition for the term “the city environment” – 70% of the respondents used the term – “the urbanized area with multi-storeyed buildings and a smog over them”; 24% – “a comfortable area with recreational zones” and 6% – “grey colour domination, prevailing of straight lines and corners”.

Thus, basing on the questionnaire consisting of 10 questions it was concluded that the visual environment, anyway, influences the psychological-emotional sphere. Unfortunately, there are many examples of induced aggressive visible environment in modern cities.

The practical value of the research is to make recommendations to Astrakhan Committees of City-planning and Architecture for improving visual environment of the city and to study the peculiarities of individual perception of visual environmental elements of the city.

The research and assessment of the influence of visual environment can be applied in various Russian regions and other countries.
