THE RISK OF ECOLOGICALLY INDUCED PATHOLOGIES AMONG EMPLOYEES OF ROAD-PATROL SERVICE DUE TO AIR POLLUTION BY CAR EXHAUSTS |
| Russian Peoples’ Friendship University, Moscow, Russia Polyclinic N2 at the Municipal Department of Internal Affairs, Moscow, Russia |
In modern conditions deterioration of the urban and industrial environment in a combination with socio-economic factors, growth of intensity of professional work have defined negative dynamics of health among the population, especially in conditions of the large cities.
The basic source of pollution of the community air in Moscow is motor transport. The specific contribution of vehicle emissions in the general pollution of the community air exceeds 90 percent.
The problem of air pollution by emissions of cars becomes more and more aggravated because of continuous increase in park of maintained vehicles, condensation of traffic flows, and instability of measures on minimizing car emissions.
Motor transport is the core and a constant source of noise to attributes about 80 percent of general noise background in communities with the level of sound pressure up to 90 decibel.
The impact of noise, especially in a combination with other health risk factors causes not only poorer hearing ability, but also negatively influences on the whole organism, first of all on central and peripheral nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine and immune systems. One of the target groups professionally exposed to noise and chemical motor transportation pollution are inspector of road-patrol service (RPS). Employees of RPS make a significant contingent in the system of the Municipal Department of Internal Affairs (MDIA) of Moscow - about 6 percent from the general number of the MDIA employees, their number is constantly increasing proportionally to the growth of a motor pool in the city. The health condition of the road patrol service inspectors as a whole and hearing in particular is of great importance for their professional performance.
As a result of the analysis of acoustic conditions at stationary RPS posts in Moscow exposed to traffic flows, significant excess over admissible noise values was reported, for which an extremely heavy city traffic accounts.
The investigation of exhaust pollution has not revealed excess over the maximum-permissible concentrations for air in the working zone on most transport-related toxicants, however the revealed concentration of these substances are dangerous to the population constantly living nearby the surveyed highways.
The estimation of health of the State Inspection of Traffic Safety employees on the basis of out-patient cards has allowed to show authentic increase in quantity of cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, nervous systems pathologies and diseases of a metabolism and sense organs in the employees of the motor licensing and inspection departments directly participating in the traffic organization.
The analysis of the obtained values of potential risk for health caused by transport noise has shown that values of risk of occurrence of immediate effects and risk of chronic influence for health of inspectors of the road-patrol service which are on duty to surveyed RPS posts can be considered as dangerous and causing fear, accordingly. Thus mass cases of complaints about various uncomfortable conditions combined with the influence of the estimated factor at the authentic tendency to growth of the general disease, and also occurrence of other effects of adverse influence are possible.
Total cancer and toxic health risks from exposure to exhaust fumes are comparable to industrial conditions; the major addition to the combined risk for health of RPS employees is a health hazard due to transport noise.
Calculation of actual health risk for RPS employees has shown, that due to their specialty an inspector of road-patrol service is 1,4 times more susceptible to harmful action of numerous environmental anthropogenous factors that is manifested as occurrence of 328 additional cases of chronic diseases per 1000 person.
